iPhone 3G – OS 3.0 – T-Mobile UK … all working
Well I thought I'd write this quick post since I upgraded to OS 3.0 within about an hour of Ultrasn0w being released. I then had considerable "fun" trying to get MMS and Tethering working.
I have a T-Mobile UK plan with Web N Walk Plus, which allows tethering to laptops instead of carrying around a USB Broadband Stick. It amuses me that O2 are charging for a Tethering Bolt-On, more than what you could purchase a Three Mobile broadband plan for, and what might actually be more convenient ... anyway I digress.
Ok, to run a non-O2 sim card in a UK purchased iPhone, you will need to Jailbreak it and then SIM Unlock it. Jailbreaking, essentially means that you are bypassing Apple's control over what software is installed on your handset. Jailbreaking needs to be done to allow the SIM unlock software to work.
DISCLAIMER: Information provided here is on an "as is" basis, and I will not take responsibility for you killing your iPhone 3G
- Head on over to iPhone Dev Team and thoroughly read posts entitled:
"Redsn0w in June"
"trois, drei, три, három!" - Once you have read the posts ... read them again! No seriously, if you haven't fully understood what you are doing, you may end up with an Apple shaped brick.
- Follow the procedure for Jailbreaking your handset using Redsn0w or PwnageTool. Redsn0w is the quick and easy method, and Pwnage requires a little more effort but is more flexible.
- Once the phone is Jailbroken, you then need to head back on over to iPhone Dev Team and thoroughly read post entitled:
"Ultras Now!" - Essentially via Cydia or Icy (Jailbreak application installers) you need to add a new repository for Ultrasn0w, and then install it.
- Once this is completed you can then use any SIM card within a UK purchased iPhone 3G
Ok ... now we have got the basics out of the way, I guess you are here since you have upgraded your iPhone 3G to 3.0 OS and cannot get tethering or MMS working on the T-Mobile network.
Right here are the steps I took on two iPhone 3G handsets and both are now working with tethering and MMS.
- Despite entering the correct settings, I could not for the life of me manage to get Tethering Option enabled.
- Using Safari browser on iPhone, go to "help.benm.at" ... scroll down to "Tethering and Internet Settings"
- Follow the link, then select UK , and obviously T-Mobile.
- Accept and Install the settings ... BUT DON'T reboot yet.
- The settings are actually slightly incorrect ... but what they have done is populate the fields you need, and more importantly enabled the Tethering Option.
- Go into Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network >
- Populate the fields as below:
Cellular Data
APN : general.t-mobile.uk
Username: user
Password: passVisual Voicemail (I dont think this works but no harm in populating it)
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: user
Password: passMMS
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: user
Pass: pass
MMSC: http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy: 149.254.201.135:8080 - Exit out of these settings back to your home screen and perform a hard reboot (hold down Home and Power until the iPhone Reboots)
- Assuming you have done this correctly, you will find a "Camera" icon in the write new Message screen. Tap the camera and choose to take a new picture or select an existing. Beware however that taking a new picture does not save it onto your camera roll as all other camera apps do. Might be best to take a picture first with the camera app, and then forward it as an MMS!
- Also in Settings > General > Network ... you will notice "Internet Tethering" option.
Hope you found this quick guide helpful ... enjoy!
Addition:
For MMS it's been suggested that in Settings > Phone > "My Number" ... your number shouldn't be listed as 07xxx but starting in it's international format which is +44 7xxx etc. It has also been suggested that anyone you wish to send an MMS to should be in international format too. Due to International travel I always ensure that my numbers are in this format now, to save hassle.
Edit: I'll keep updating this as and when issues/changes arise.

I’m all up and running with ultrasn0w and using TMobile in the UK. Have followed your instructions and all seems correct BUT the mms always fails to send. Have I done anything wrong (obviously I have, but all help appreciated!!) Cheers!
Hi Phil,
Thanks for the message.
So you’ve followed all the steps and now in Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network they are all exactly as above?
Did you then hard reboot? Hold Home and Power at same time?
Do you have MMS enabled on your T-Mobile Contract? If you haven’t I think you either need to get someone to send you an MMS, or you need to send yourself one.
Perhaps try to send yourself an MMS and see how that goes.
I noticed with my handset that the first few MMS’ wouldn’t go through, and then suddenly it burst into life.
wow- quick response
to go through the points:
yep, exactly as you said
yep, hard reboot
yes mms is enabled and have tried to mms myself a couple of times. the progress bar then almost completes and then gives me an exclamation mark by the photo
Interestingly, TMobile told me \\"i-phone 2g and the i-phone 3g don\\\’t have the facility on to send picture messages\\"….think they need to update their info!!
still not got it working but did get some info from tmobile if it\’s of use-
Profile name
T-Mobile PictureMessage
Homepage/Message Server http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
use Proxy Yes
Proxy IP address 149.254.201.135
Proxy Port 8080
Connection Security Off
Session mode Permanent
Internet Mode http
Multimedia Reception always
Request Read/Delivery Reports No/No
Accept Advertisements No
Accept Anonymous No
Maximum Message Size max 300 KB
MMS Access point details
Account Name visible in device T-Mobile PictureMessage
APN general.t-mobile.uk
User name user
Password one2one
Prompt Password Off
Authentication PAP
IP Address Dynamic
so the only difference seems to be the mms password….made no difference this end- still can\’t send myself a bloody picture message and strangely the internet tethering option has just disappeared!
I seem to have it working but when I synced my iPhone it deleted the tethering option? Do you know how to fix this?
I am on a contract with t-mobile how do I get unlimited internet and how much is it?
Thanks ASH.
heh thanks
That’s really strange. I was getting exactly the same for quite some time and then it just burst into life.
Oh don’t bother calling T-Mobile UK. I called them to just get the generic mms settings and kept getting a monotone “We don’t support the iPhone”. Strange that T-Mobile US have openly supported it for quite some time! /RANT
Anyway …. is it possibly you can get someone to MMS you? Mine started working when I received a MMS.
Yup those settings seem the same:
The Proxy 149.254.201.135 with proxy port 8080 is exactly the same as when typed in saying 149.254.201.135:8080
The password I think is a legacy from the days where they used to be one2one and I’m sure it still works.
Internet tethering has disappeared … that’s strange. I’d go into settings reset back to default. Remove the Benm.at profile. Then re-download. It will bring the internet tethering back. I messed about a few times with it!
Hey Ash,
I’d reapply the settings from the BenM.AT site to re-enable the tethering. Alternatively if you’re creative you can use that site to create your own profile using the settings on the post above.
T-Mo have changed their internet package. I understand that on “Flext” tariff internet is standard, however it’s an extra £5 a month if you wish to get WebNWalk Plus which gives you 3Gig per month and allows tethering too.
You can always try tethering without having that option enabled … just depends if they catch you
hang on there is a conflict in the info
at the to the address is 149.254.201.135.8080
now it’s 149.254.201.135:8080 (colon not full stop) which is correct?!
OOOOOPS
Phil, huge apologies. There’s a typo in my original post. I shall correct it now.
It should be: 149.254.201.135:8080 (the colon essentially means PORT).
I shall amend now. Sorry about the confusion.
no worries- easy mistake to make!
still not working though
Just sent an mms from another phone and it has sent the usual txt about collecting the message on-line with password etc…does this mean the problem is at the iPhone end or the t-mobile end?
Ah that message is T-Mobile end. If you get that message, then it’s saying that your account has never sent a MMS message before. It’s auto activating … so if you have a phone capable of mms, they figure if you can send one, then you can surely receive one. Up until then, any you receive will go to the website.
T-Mobile say to activate it, you must send yourself a MMS message, and it all kicks into life. T-Mobile info here
I’m not sure what to suggest now. Ensure the amended settings are correct. Hard reset. Try to send yourself an MMS.
Oh couple of things to try … just out of curiosity … if you have wifi or 3g on … turn them off.
turned off wifi and 3g- did another hard reset and still nothing
so close yet so far..
just to check, is this correct?
MMSC: http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
I\’m starting to run out of things to try
have also done reset, reloaded the benm and re inputted the settings.
Any other suggestions?
Hi Phil … I’m frustrated for you here.
I’ve amended my post to show a joined up screenshot of the settings. The MMSC: is correct.
One thing you could perhaps try to get MMS enabled. Do you have access to another handset which is MMS compatible, just to send your first initial MMS with? Might kickstart things.
Mine was exactly same as yours … sat there getting to 95% … really frustrating and then burst into life!
no idea what is going on now- SOOO frustrating…bloody mms proxy address simply disappeared!
Re-installed it all yet again and now it seems to be trying to send- gets to 95% on the progress bar and stays there for 4mins then gives up!
AAAAAAARGH!
not beaten yet!
well, that’s a turn up! It’s now SENT a picture!
BUT the message that came back to the iPhone was the “you have a picture message from ……view it once within 14 days etc etc”
SO how confused am I….can send a picture, but not receive one!
DOH!
YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
IT\\\’S WORKING!
Thanks for your patience Tom- what a star!
haha excellent … told you there was no rhyme or reason, it just suddenly kicks into life. Glad it’s working!
ok- new question. Is mms actually reliable and have you regularly sent some pics?
Tried sending again with no joy:
tried sending a pic from another phone- nothing!
once activated t mobile are supposed to send an “you are activated for mms” picture message- not had one!
It seems I’m not out of the woods yet
:S
Thanks for all the help you are providing with this site, however I have followed the instructions but all I get is the red exclamation mark ! If you have any ideas at all how I can do this I would extremley grateful as ididnt have muchhIr before I started trying to get this to work!
Meant to say I can receive just not send.
Hi Ian,
I think the red exclamation message is what most of us get initially. I got it on both that I configured. It seems to take a while of things to percolate through.
My only real suggestions are:
ensure all settings are as posted
hard reboot
try sending with wifi and/or 3g turned off
Experiment with those options and see what happens.
You mentioned that incoming messages were ok, so MMS seems to be activated on T-Mobile for you.
no internet tethering. but mms is working fine.
Hi Tom,
have tried all of those and even rejailbreaking and unlocking but still the dreaded red exclamation mark!!!!!!! and now i cant re-install the previous apps i had on it……….
Hi Ian,
That is really strange. I was away from the PC overnight and suspect that you may have continued trying to resolve this … where are you currently at?
Still no luck I\\\’m afraid, looks like it\\\’s going to go and then nothing but the red exclamation mark. I have my phone number as 07etc should I put it as +447. I know it\\\’s a long shot but I\\\’m grasping at straws!!! Lol
Actually yes … change it to +44 … out of habit all of my numbers are +44 7xxx rather than 07xxx. When I was researching getting mine to work, I seem to recall one website making a statement that you needed the number to be in international format.
I didn’t pay much attention since mine are all +44.
There was also something about checking in settings > phone > my number
and ensuring your number in there is in international format. If successful, I shall update the main post.
Cheers
changed my number to international format, made sure the number i\\\\\\\’m sending to is in the same layout, reset settings from scratch and still nothing! Bar goes to about 90% and stops for a varied amount of time before the red mark appears. Really bugging me now!!!!! lol
finally got it to send one tonight, thanks so much for your patience and help Tom, it has been much appreciated. Now for the confession………..was so peed off earlier i got my t-mobile contract out and had a look at it, 600 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited web, fixed so it doesn’t go over and give a nasty bill. which meant i wasn’t able to send mms becuase they weren’t part of my allowance! after a brief chat with a customer service rep and £5 top up credit everything is hunky dory!!! Hope you understand what an idiot i feel………
hahaha love it! Glad you’ve got it sorted though.
Firstly, thanks for the tips.
Secondly, I have an unlocked iPhone 3GS imported from Italy (and therefore not jailbroken) working on T-mobile UK (Flext).
Thirdly, my experience and problem:
When using BenM settings as is, MMS does not work. When I use the amended settings, as stated above, MMS works.
However, as soon as I amend the settings, the option to enable Internet Tethering disappears.
However (again), if I use the unamended settings and click on the Enable Internet Tethering option, I get the message \\"\\"Set up Internet Tethering. To enable tethering on this account, contact Carrier\\" and then a Cancel button to click.
Therefore, my questions are: is tethering enabled on T-mobile? Has anyone managed to do it? What are the settings?
Also, I noticed that BenM\\\’s profile includes details for Visual Voicemail. Is it possible to get this working on T-mobile? I assumed that this would require some set up from the carrier\\\’s end and because O2 have a monopoly, there would be no incentive for T-mobile to enable this feature in the UK. Am I wrong?
Further to my last message, I appear to have found a (partial) solution:
Rather than using BenM’s default settings for T-mobile and then editing them on the iPhone once downloaded, use the Config Generator and input the details set out above.
I now have MMS functioning and the ability to turn on Internet Tethering without receiving the message to contact my carrier. Still yet to work out if Internet Tether actually works with T-mobile though.
P.S. There appears to be some glitch with your security code feature
Hi again,
I just orderd the unlimited internet on t mobile so hopefully that will work. but my mms is not working.
How is the 3GS from Italy, I’m tempted to get one from there too.
I’ve been using the tething, as I have WebNWalk too .. works fine.
I’ve still got the tethering option after importing BenM and then making the necessary changes … not sure why you lose them.
Visual Voicemail … as you said, I’m sure it’s carrier dependent … so I wouldn’t hold your breath with T-Mo UK.
Yes, I notice they have a configurator … however there is one for MMS and one for Internet etc. For writing my blog post, it seemed easier for most people to import the standard one, and then make the necessary changes. Although might be worth contacting them to get the settings changed correctly.
Thanks for the heads up on the security code feature … I’ll look into it.
Hello Guys,
I am using 3g iphone 3.0 unlocked to t-mobile UK.
Your comments section has been very useful to me. The picture messages are working for me now, the bit I was missing was the hard reboot.
I rebooted the phone about 3 times, because I remember the customer services at t-mobile say, that sometimes it takes a few tries to catch the settings or something.
Not the fastest mms. The iphone MMS has a mind of its own, sometimes it will be quick, other times slow. But generally faster to other non-iphones.
But I have noticed if you put TEXT with picture, it takes much longer, can anyone test this and verify please.
Also can someone try to send MMS directly by going into PHOTO’S LIBRARY, then selecting MMS from the options on the bottom bar, does this seems any quicker ??
Lastly can someone try MMS with Wifi off, and then and compare.
Interestly I did not use the ‘help.benm.at’ at all. I just copied the info in this forum directly into the Celluar Data Network Section.
As for tethering, no problems, I have got mine working perfectly and fast via usb (Why would you want to use bluetooth to tether-uses to much battery and is unreliable). I loaded an App from cydia (the unpaid Version) ‘PdaNet’. Then you have to download another sister App on your Laptop. Simple and beautiful, it works.
Many Thanks Guys
OK MMS Sends but recieves the message that I have to go onto the internet to view it???
The iPhone says it is tethering but when I turn off the laptops wifi it doesn\’t load. I have currently got 3g and edge turned off as it is not unlimited I was trying to use the wifi from my iPhone to use on my laptop whilst the laptops wifi was off to test if it works can you do that????
When my contract updates this month I should have 3g and edge working!
Hi Kal,
I’ve noticed that if you take a photo from within the messaging app, it doesn’t get saved to the photo roll. Perhaps it is best to take photo’s using camera app, and then go into the gallery and select an image to take.
I haven’t had chance to test a picture only MMS as compared to a picture and text one. If anyone else gets a moment … please feel free to comment.
The BenM site is really just to make things simple, since by default the tethering app is not available.
PDANet is a great piece of software … but requires your phone to be jailbroken … mind you so does running T-Mobile on an O2 iPhone!
However as an infrequent tethering user, I liked the simplicity of the tethering, turn it on, my macbook finds the phone … connected.
Hi Ash,
Ok when you get the message that you have to go to the internet to view it. It means your phone for some reason isnt MMS activated. Try to send yourself an MMS, or put your SIM into another handset and send and MMS and see if it activates.
How are you connecting your iPhone to your laptop to allow tethering? Bluetooth or wifi?
Ah right, I don’t think you can use the phone’s wifi to tether via … I think it has to be 3G or Edge.
Ye I sent one too myself and it sent good but came back with the go to net message.
I was using a cable using the iphone tethering option not pdanet or modem.
Right I’ll try with 3g or edge then.
I now have webnwalk unlimited net for £5 a month which works perfectly both 3g and edge.
The MMS now sends and recieves straight to the iphone, no having to visit the tmobile website anymore.
Also I have tethering working but abit slow with PDAnet from cydia. The iphone settings tethering doesn’t seem to be working.
This is with all the setting used from this blog.
Thanks alot!
I have tried everything posted here….nothing worked I can receive MMS but cannot send, its driving me insane…can anyone helpppppppppp
I am having problems with Internet tethering. I have an iPhone 3G that has been unlocked properly by O2. I have installed the profile and ammended it with the above settings, and I still don’t see the Internet Tethering button. There is a camera icon in messaging, so I presume that works, but it is more the internet tethering I am more concerned about. Can anybody help?
